Planting the Seed for Future Biomedical Careers

FHS BioMed Students

As we focus on the development of Biomedical Science, we observe how it continues to innovate itself as a central step in designing sophisticated therapies and treatments for our health. At Frederick High School, the Biomedical Science Academy provides robust opportunities for students to engage in rigorous coursework in the rapidly expanding biomedical science field.

Through their partnership with Colorado State University (CSU), students will receive four college credits that can be transferable to any university, once they successfully complete the program. “The program helps students solidify whether or not they want to pursue a biomedical science career as they move onto post-secondary education,” shared Bhreanna Helman, Biomedical Science Academy Teacher at Frederick High School.

The first Biomedical Science Academy class graduated from Frederick High in 2019, and most of these students are currently attending a four-year university pursuing a medical degree. “This is such a successful program for students because it provides them an introduction to a variety of topics, and introductions to biomedical careers,” added Helman.

During their freshman year in the Biomedical Foundations course, students work in a six-day lab to test fictional patients for bacteria and go through procedures to do research. Students test antibiotics to see which one is most effective. As students go through the program, they take anatomy and physiology, and participate in virtual reality (VR) technology to further explore topics of anatomy and physiology. During their senior year, students in Biomedical Engineering complete a semester-long research project where they are tasked to improve some aspect from  the biomedical career field and present it at CSU. Part of their capstone class during the second semester is to focus on their own personal interests to complete an independent study.

The uniqueness of this program comes from the sense of community that is created within the classrooms. Students enrolled in the Biomedical Science Academy continue in the same class with the same peers every year. “They can also establish great relationships with both Mr. Hoffman and myself, as we work together closely, and monitor their progress throughout the four years that they are at Frederick High,” stated Helman.

As they look ahead to the future of the Biomedical Science Academy, Hoffman and Helman have begun collaboration with the Internship Program Coordinator at the Career Elevation and Technology Center, to provide apprenticeship and internship opportunities for students so they can better prepare for their future careers.
