Building a team from the ground up

This summer, Frederick High School’s athletic teams are learning teamwork, perseverance and dedication on and off the court by giving back to their local community. Several student-athletes spent a day running drills, but not the typical drills they are used to practicing. Our students helped revitalize a home in Dacono through Habitat for Humanity.

Nothing but nails
Over the course of three days, upwards of 20 players and coaches from our football and basketball teams learned how to work together to fix up a home. Each team spent the day working on a specific task. From working on the roof, to pulling down old material, to removing gutters, to preparing the frontside of the house for painting, there was no task that these teammates were not able to accomplish together.

The dedication to work through small hiccups, and watching each student get the opportunity to lead was truly a memorable experience. These large and small tasks are instrumental in preparing the house for years to come, and preparing the teams for the season that lies ahead. Through sweat and determination, students worked hard, were respectful and enjoyed watching the homeowner’s smile grow as his home took on a new life.

Volunteering runs deep
Throughout the school year and summer, our school looks for opportunities for our students to give back. Although giving back to the community is not new to students at Frederick High, this was the first year that Frederick has partnered with Habitat for Humanity.

It just so happened that the homeowner was very familiar with the school and Coach Lear. His two sons had graduated from Frederick High, and both played football under the coach’s direction. This happenstance connection was a great reminder for everyone about the tight knit community that we call home.

Frederick High School students, staff and teachers are invested in the community and actively volunteer for various opportunities including collecting and distributing Thanksgiving baskets to families in need, providing Thanksgiving dinner to first responders, participating in Miner’s Day, supporting Rotary Club’s Easter Egg Hunt preparation and community BINGO events, and hosting a community tailgate event during homecoming.

Involvement in the community is foundational to the success of Frederick High. By partnering with local organizations, students work alongside community members, they become a part of the towns we serve and they learn the leadership skills needed to unite in future tasks.
